A Trio | River Moon, Environmental Studies & Sofie

A Trio | River Moon, Environmental Studies & Sofie

A coffee Q and A with Sofie, Brand Ambassador/Intern for
River Moon Coffee Roasting Company.

Sofie is River Moon Coffee’s newest Brand Ambassador/Intern. She will play a pivotal role representing our products and providing information on all of our offerings. Given that Sofie is a student at Gustavus Adolphus majoring in Environmental Studies with a concentration in Social Sciences, she’ll also provide insight, perspective and focus on nurturing Gaia as we continue to focus on sustainable practices.

Q

What do you hope to accomplish for River Moon customers?

A

I know that most customers of River Moon are already aware that they are supporting a business that is focused on high-quality, unique artisanal products sourced from the best origins. However, I don’t know if customers are always aware of just how much work River Moon puts in to building strong customer relationships and truly valuing each and every connection in their journey. I think Juanita and Geoff are highly attuned to the distinct needs of their communities and partners, and I really believe this makes River Moon unique. I hope that my work at River Moon can help further showcase this admirable dimension and remind customers that supporting River Moon is a worthwhile investment on so many levels.

Q

What sparked your interest in being a brand ambassador for River Moon?

A

Growing up with a dad who was a self-employed musician, I learned to recognize that being a self-employed, small business owner is not always easy. It comes with a lot of risks and requires a lot of creative energy. However, I feel that it is extremely important to support these types of endeavors because, more often than not, it is the small businesses of the world that are the leaders of new innovations, social and environmental awareness, unique practices and creativity. I am interested in working within this sort of environment at River Moon and in helping them continue to be a leader on all of these exciting fronts.

Q

How might your experience at River Moon benefit your academic work in Environmental Studies and the Social Sciences?

A

I have always felt a strong connection to the natural world around me. I believe that Gaia, our Mother Earth, needs to be valued and protected, and I think my studies and interests have always reflected this. After spending a semester in Tuscany, Italy studying sustainable agriculture last fall, I began to focus my academic work more on the food production aspect of environmental protection and sustainability. I have worked on the hands-on, farming side and also on the retail side in a food co-op, but I am really looking forward to working at the in-between level that serves as the bridge between the two, which is a large part of River Moon’s work. In particular, I am interested in learning more about the farms and farmers that grow for River Moon and furthering the connections with them.
